Network Hub
Networking hubs are the central components of the local area networks (LANs). To understand the role of networking hubs, a basic understanding of LANs is required first. Whenever one or more computers are networked together, a LAN is to be created. A LAN can be essential at work, but it can also be very useful at home. The purpose of joining computers together in a LAN is to share resources like files, a printer, a scanner, and Internet access.
There are four components in a basic wired hub network:
- Ethernet wire
- Network Interface Cards (NICs)
- Networking Hubs
- Networking Software
- Problems with Hubs
Most hubs detect typical problems, like jabbering on individual ports, excessive collisions, and partition the port, disconnecting it from the shared medium. Thus, hub-based Ethernet is usually more robust than coaxial cable-based Ethernet, where a bad device can adversely affect the entire collision domain. Even if not partitioned automatically, a hub simplifies troubleshooting because they remove the need to troubleshoot faults on a long cable with several taps; status lights on the hub can indicate the possible problem source or, as a last resort, devices can be disconnected from a hub one by one much more easily than from a coaxial cable.
Networking hubs have all features but been phased out with switches becoming more reasonably priced.
